QUALITY OF LIFE
Tokyo is a city that truly has it all. With a population of 38 million in the metropolitan area and 13 million in the city itself, it is the most densely populated city in the world. However, despite its density, Tokyo consistently ranks highly in terms of livability and quality of life. In fact, in 2021, The Economist ranked Tokyo fourth out of 140 cities worldwide in terms of quality of life, taking into account factors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

AIR QUALITY & TRANSPORTATION
For digital nomads, Tokyo is the definition of cool. Its excellent transportation system and air quality make it an ideal place to live and work. In terms of air quality, Tokyo’s air quality index average is 39, which is relatively good compared to other cities around the world. This is in stark contrast to other popular digital nomad destinations such as Bangkok, where the air quality index can reach as high as 200, or Chiang Mai, where it can reach as high as 360 or higher.

CULINARY SCENE
But it’s not just the air quality that makes Tokyo an appealing place to live. The city is also home to the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world, making it an undisputed leader in the culinary arts. Tokyo has something to offer everyone, whether you’re a fan of soba, sushi, matcha, desserts, coffee, or international cuisine.

GREEN SPACE
In addition to its excellent food and air quality, Tokyo also offers plenty of green space. Despite being the most densely populated city in the world, 7.5% of the city is designated for green space, which is on par with cities like Melbourne and Paris. However, because the city is so well-designed, it gives the feeling that there are far more parks than the 7.5% number represents.

Tokyo is a city that truly has it all. With its excellent transportation, air quality, dining options, and green space, it is no wonder that it has been voted as Asia’s number one cool city. For digital nomads, there is no excuse not to come and explore this amazing metropolis.
